A SOLDIER was killed while three others were wounded when government forces were ambushed by suspected New People’s Army rebels the other night in Eastern Samar.
Lt. Col. Niceforo Diaz, spokesman of Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Division (ID) said the ambush occurred at around 8 p.m. in Bgy. Antipolo, Llorente, Eastern Samar.
Investigators said elements of Army’s 43rd Infantry Battalion were on patrol in the area when they were ambushed by rebels.
A landmine planted by the rebels also exploded when hit by the military vehicle.
It was learned that soldiers were assigned to secure evidence of illegal mining activities in the area when they were ambushed.
Despite of the surprised attack, soldiers were able to fight back that resulted in a brief firefight,killing one soldier and wounding three others.
Authorities are conducting follow-up investigation into the incident.
