Rebel leader slain in clash with Army


SARANGANI PROVINCE -- A new leader of the Platoon Lawin of the New People's Army (NPA)'s Guerilla Front 71 was killed in an encounter with the military in the boundaries of Sarangani province and Davao del Sur on Sunday morning.
The clash happened in Malungon, Sarangani province and Malita, Davao Del Sur around 10 a.m.
According to Colonel Adolfo Espuelas, chief of the Army's 73rd Infantry Batallion, the dead victim was identified as Julito Ginang, of Matanao, Davao del Sur.
Ginang was identified as alias Dindin, Bambam and Charlie by his comrades.
The encounter occurred when the military responded to reports of extortion activities by the rebels in the remote areas in Malita near Malungon.
Ginang is reportedly a political officer of the Guerilla Front 74 in North Cotabato and former sub-commander of another NPA group before transferring to the Front 71.
The military is on alert for retaliatory attacks of the group.
