MANILA (Xinhua) -- A top Philippine military official said Tuesday five operatives of the Southeast Asian regional terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) are actively roaming in the Sulu province, a bailiwick area of the local terror group Abu Sayyaf.
"At present, five are actively moving around Sulu," said the Armed forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Mindanao Command Chief Raymundo Ferrer. He named three of the five JI operatives in Sulu as Mauwiyah, alias Manobo; Marwan, alias Zulkipli; and one Qayim.
Ferrer's spokesman Randolph Cabangbang identified the two other JI men in Sulu as Amin Baco, alias Abu Jihad and Sa'ad, alias Bahar. He said JI has no known presence in Basilan and in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
However, Ferrer said he is not aware of the number of JI operatives operating in Eastern Mindanao which is under the AFP Eastern Mindanao Command.
Cabangbang said the campaign against JI is linked with the continuing operations against the Abu Sayyaf, adding "Actually, what we are doing is we are continuously hunting down the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) because the JIs are usually with the ASG (in Sulu)."
