PNoy names new Air Force chief

President Benigno Aquino III has named Major General Lauro Catalino dela Cruz as the new commanding general of the Philippine Air Force.

A member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1980, Dela Cruz is set to assume the post left by Lt. gen. Oscar Rabena, a member of PMA Class 1978.

Dela Cruz is scheduled to retire from the service in April 2014. On the other hand, Rabena opted for early retirement — he was to retire in August when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56.

Prior to his new designation, Dela Cruz served as the Air Force Chief of Air Staff. His other previous posts include commander of the 205th Tactical Operations Wing, deputy commander of the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing and deputy commander of the 710th Special Operations Wing.

He was also a flight instructor, training officer, management and operations officer and pilot instructor at the PAF Flying School.

Dela Cruz holds a diploma in Arts from the Massey University in New Zealand and a Master's Degree in Management and major in Public Administration from the Philippine Christian University.

Aquino is expected to preside over the Air Force change of command at the PAF headquaters in Villamor Air Base. — with Amita Legaspi/RSJ, GMA News
