Militants demand ransom for Australian hostage

COTABATO, Philippines (Xinhua) -- Militants demanded ransom in exchange for the freedom of an Australian national who was abducted in Zamboanga Sibugay province, police said on Monday.

Felicisimo Khu, chief Director for Integrated Police Operations, said gunmen holding Warren Richard Rodwell demanded at least P1 million (22,831 U.S. dollars) ransom money.

Khu said the demand was relayed to the victim's Filipina wife.

Roduel was seized on Dec. 5 from his house in Green Meadows Subdivision, Upper Pangi village in Ipil town. He was last seen along with his captors in the province of Basilan.

The Australian government has since warned their citizens from traveling to southern Philippines due to the abduction.
