1 killed, 11 hurt in Bukidnon explosion


MANILA, Philippines – A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerilla was killed while 11 others, mostly children and teenagers, were injured in a explosion in Kibawe, Bukidnon past noon Monday.

Police said the unidentified NPA rebel died after an M203 grenade launcher that was accidentally dropped by a fellow guerilla exploded.

Police dismissed earlier an earlier report that indicated the fatality was a minor.

The NPA rebels were allegedly convincing residents of Barangay Sampaguita to oppose the building of a dam in their area when the explosion occurred.

Injured were 42-year-old Barceliza Sabellano, 42, and several children and teenagers, namely:

Bernie Teric, 12
Jakerey Antivo, 12
Julieben Matunhay, 20
Samson Matunhay, 16
Emmanuel Matunhay, 9
Rogelio Buhawe Jr., 9
Aldie Capunay, 18
Daniel Meras, 19

All of the injured were brought to the hospital for treatment.

Kibawe police chief Butch Ian MiƱoza said many others were injured but were not sent to the hospital because they sustained only minimal injuries.
