Soldiers seize high powered rifles in Sorsogon clash

LEGAZPI CITY- Army soldiers seized several high powered firearms on Tuesday during patrol operations, which was followed by an encounter with communist guerrillas at a village in Barcelona town in Sorsogon, a Philippine Army officer said today.

Major Angelo Guzman, spokesperson of the Army's 9th Infantry Division, said the seized firearms include five M16 rifles, a Garand rifle, a M1 Carbine rifle and a shotgun, and various ammunition.

A nine-man squad of soldiers on combat patrol at about 10 a.m. Tuesday at the shorelines of Barangay Poblacion Norte inspecting an abandoned sea vessel found, a Carbine rifle and a shotgun believe to be owned by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels operating in the area.

Four hours later, while scouring the area, the same squad of soldiers led Army Corporal Jeffry Balajadia encountered some 10 NPA rebels about half a kilometer from the abandoned vessel.

A 10-minute firefight ensued after which the NPA rebels fled towards the northwest direction leaving behind them five M16 rifles and one cal.30 M1 Garand rifle.

No casualty from the government was reported while they are still determining casualties from the NPA rebels as bloodstains were seen in the encounter site. - PNA
