A bystander in Surigao del Sur on Sunday was killed in a landmine explosion, supposedly perpetrated by members of the New People’s Army (NPA), the military said.
Col. Leoplodo Galon, spokesman of the Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command, said the unidentified civilian was killed in a blast along the interior road of Brgy. Bincongan in Hinatuan town at around noon on Sunday.
Six soldiers of the 75th Infantry Battalion on board the truck were slightly wounded due to the explosion, and are currently being treated at the town hospital, he said.
The attack by alleged NPA members came days after the government declared on Friday an 18-day holiday truce with the NPA, supposedly to boost the peace process between the government and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). The NPA is the armed wing of the CPP.
Last Thursday, the military also attributed a raid of a municipal jail in Surigao del Sur to suspected NPA rebels. - VVP, GMA News
