Soldiers clash with Reds in Davao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines – A firefight has erupted between government troops and suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas in Davao del Sur, a military official said.

Col. Leopoldo Galon, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Eastern Command spokesperson, said soldiers encountered some 30 suspected rebels in Sitio Catmon, Barangay Manuel Peralta in Malita town.

Galon said the soldiers belong to Task Group Mulawin of the 102nd Infantry Brigade of the AFP and 73rd Infantry Battalion of the Army.

He added air assets have been deployed to the area to reinforce the troops. – Report from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM
