MILF, gov't negotiator seek to dispel 'rumors' on P5M grant

Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) vice chairman for political affairs Ghadzali Jaafar confirmed receiving a P5-million check from the government to jump-start the Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Institute (BLMI). He downplayed fears that the money was used to buy arms, saying that the P5 million remains untouched.

Text messages alleging that the Aquino administration gave P5 billion – not P5 million – to the MILF to buy arms circulated earlier.

According to a report on GMA News’ News TV Live, the check was handed over to the MILF Peace Panel during exploratory talks held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in late August.

Government peace negotiator Marvic Leonen and the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) sought to counteract the ‘rumors’ by recalling that the check was for P5 million and meant for the BLMI.

He said the P5 million was a commitment of the Philippine government to the MILF made during the Arroyo administration and fulfilled during the Aquino presidency.

Jaafar clarified that the money did not go to MILF chairman Al Haj Murad Ibrahim and that instead, it had gone straight to the MILF peace panel. earlier. http://www.gmanews.tv/story/236616/nation/p5m-given-to-milf-meant-for-moro-leaders-training-govt

He also said that the MILF peace panel is obliged report to their government counterparts how the money will be used, preventing any misuse of the funds. — BC/ELR, GMA News
