Philippine defense officials off to US, with Scarborough and China high on agenda

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine defense and military officials head to the United States Friday to meet with their counterparts on “regional issues,” including the dispute with China over Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal.

Defense spokesman Peter Paul Galvez said among the topics to be taken up by the officials led by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin are the Philippine military's modernization and issues such as "freedom of navigation" and developments at Scarborough.

With Gazmin will be Undersecretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs and Strategic Concerns Pio Batino, Assistant Secretary for Strategic Assessment Raymund Quilop, Navy chief Vice Admiral Alexander Pama, and Air Force chief Lieutenant General Lauro dela Cruz.

Gazmin and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario are scheduled to meet with US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington on April 30.
