MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines must now prepare to
defend its territory as China continues to assert its claim over the
Panatag Shoal (Scarborough Shoal), Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said on Wednesday.
Enrile was asked for his reaction to reports that China's vessels remain in the area and are barring Filipino fishermen from entering.
"We better buy war equipment. We better buy our weapons, our means of defense," he told reporters.
Enrile said recent events show that "China is grabbing the place from us."
"Ano ang gagawin mo kung 'yong kapitbahay mo ay malayo ang bahay niya at pupunta sa iyong kapaligiran at mayro'n siyang espada at kampilan o pana o javelin? Eh 'di bumili ka rin ng kampilan. Maghasa ka rin ng gulok."
