MILF: Nothing to do with Kidapawan jail 'rescue' try

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front on Wednesday insisted it had nothing to do with an attempt to spring an inmate from the Kidapawan City Jail last weekend.

MILF military spokesman Von Al Haq belied claims the MILF was behind the failed rescue mission for inmate Datukan Samad, a.k.a. Lastikman.

“He is not a member of the MILF,” Al Haq said in an article posted on the MILF website.

Earlier, Col. Leopoldo Galon of the Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command,  said that about 50 cohorts of Samad at the MILF’s Special Operations Group attacked the jail in an apparent rescue attempt on Samad.

Samad faces charges of murder and kidnapping-for-ransom, among other crimes.

At least three people were killed and 12 were wounded in Sunday's incident.

Al Haq noted the MILF did not even file a complaint when Lastikman was arrested by the military.

In Sunday's incident, the so-called rescuers fired rocket-propelled grenades and used high-powered firearms at the jail perimeter and the adjacent City Hall.

But jail guards fought back and the attackers fled towards Nuwangan village.

The MILF noted Lastikman was implicated in the killings of more than 30 people in Pikit, North Cotabato in recent years.

He and his followers were also linked to a series of highway robberies along the Cotabato-Davao national highway.
