2 alleged ranking NPA leaders fall in Laguna raid

Two suspected ranking members of the New People's Army fell into government hands following a raid in Laguna Tuesday afternoon, a regional military spokesman said Wednesday.

Col. Generoso Bolina of the Armed Forces Southern Luzon Command identified those arrested as one Anabelle Bueno alias Nancy/Maksie/Sallie/Girlie/Rosita Malabanan and a certain Lara/Fara, whose true identity is still being determined.

Both were apprehended about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday inside a suspected rebel safe house in Barangay Maitim in the town of Bay.

The arrest was carried out by virtue of four warrants for multiple attempted murder, multiple frustrated murder and multiple murder, Bolina said.

The military described Bueno as allegedly a member of the executive committee of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee, head of the regional organization department, member of the executive committee of the sub regional military area-guerilla unit 1 and regional finance officer of the STRPC.

On the other hand, Lara/Fara was described as finance officer of platoon magnum of guerilla unit 1.

Recovered during the raid were improvised explosive devices, 15 illegal explosive sticks and four blasting caps.

All items are now under police custody for court inquest, Bolina said.

The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. The outlawed group will be observing its 43rd founding anniversary on March 29.

Peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines have remained stalled since August 2004.
