Abu Sayyaf attacks Marine camp in Sulu

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines  – Suspected Abu Sayyaf militants fired mortar shells at a Marine camp in Sulu on New Year’s Eve.

Rear Admiral Armand Guzman, Naval Forces Western Mindanao chief, said no casualty was reported on the government side.

He said the Marines retaliated and repelled the rebels from continuously firing on the camp.

It was not immediately known if the rebels, who retreated toward the forest, suffered any casualty.

Guzman said the attack came as the troops were placed on alert in preparation for any possible atrocity from the Abu Sayyaf.
